Beardsley Patentee Beacon Iowa base embossed May 12th 1885 |
Beacon |
IA |
1886 |
Beardsley was born in England in 1850 and came to Iowa in
1871 where he entered business as a druggist. A half a dozen different
style Beardsley soda bottles exist, including a Hutchison stopper
bottle with the six dimples, but this is his only threaded finish
bottle. Beardsley was an innovative type bottler, but he was unable to
obtain caps to seal the bottles and his threaded finish bottles never
were used. The 1885 patent must have been for the threaded cap. This
is the earliest example of this type cap finish for soft drinks. The
aluminum “roll on closure” or “twist cap” came into use I
about 1970, and the present day plastic “twist cap” in about 1985,
a century after Beardsley designed this bottle. Beardsley’s son also
was a druggist and was elected Governor of Iowa in 1948. |
